The universe is a truly incredible place where we can observe many wonders of nature, including the familiar and beautiful patterns of the seasons. The seasons are the result of the Earth’s tilt relative to the sun’s rays and its orbit around the sun. This tilt causes the sun’s rays to move across the sky in a different manner throughout the year and creates the alternation of warm weather and cold weather, which defines the yearly cycle of the seasons. On Earth, this cycle is divided into four distinct seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter - but the length and severity of the cycle varies by region. Other planets in the universe can experience similar seasonal cycles and some can even experience more extreme seasons than we have on Earth. For example, on the planet Mars, the combination of a much larger orbit and axial tilt results in a nearly double length summer season and a severely cold winter. On the other hand, planets with lesser tilted or more circular orbits, such as Venus, experience little variation in seasonal temperatures. All in all, the concept of seasons is quite common throughout the universe and is part of what makes the universe such an amazing place.
